Shepard chefs take second in first MACS event

Shepard High School’s culinary arts team took second place in the first juried competition sponsored by the Moraine Area Career System.
Lauren Loomis, Catie Petrak and Janet Ramos made up the team from the Palos Heights high school. Dan Solski, the team’s teacher, also attended the competition.
Students prepared minestrone soup, Caesar salad, chicken Parmesan and Italian wedding cookies. Each team added its own flourishes to the traditional dishes.
Judges included Chuck Pine, executive chef and owner of Chuck’s Southern Comfort Cafe in Burbank; Elliot McCarty, head chef at D’Masti Catering in Blue Island; and Mark Rimkus, executive chef at Flo & Santos Pizza and Pierogi in Chicago.
The Richards High School team took first place, and Argo High School came in third. Other teams included Eisenhower, Sandburg, Andrew, Stagg and Reavis high schools.
