Local artists showcasing their original work in Moraine Valley Community College’s Gallery 2013 Juried Community Art Exhibition were presented with first-, second- and third place awards and three honorable mentions at a reception in the college’s Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery.
The first-place prize of $200 was awarded to Julie Dekker, of Tinley Park, for her acrylic “Spin Art.”
The second-place award of $125 went to Connie Iacovetti, Palos Hills, for her oil on canvas painting “Basket of Flowers,” and Mary Tierney, Orland Park, won a $100 third place prize for “Hare’ Barn,” a conte crayon on paper piece.
Jason Blohm, Tinley Park; Pat Gavrielides, Palos Hills, and Stella Solliday, Orland Park, each received $25 for honorable mentions.
Winners were chosen from 40 artists who were selected by juror Alex Chitty to show their work in the exhibition. Chitty is a professor in the print media department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She also designs and implements educational activities and workshops for teachers, families, school groups, and the general public at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art.
The Gallery 2013 Juried Community Art Exhibition is an annual show to feature the artistic talent of area residents. The free exhibit is open to the public and runs through July 31. Viewing hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.
