Members of Eisenhower High School’s girls’ cross country team this year took part in a mandatory study session held in place of running one day every few weeks, according to a press release.
Teacher Julie Fox said the study group, dubbed XCeleration, started on a day that was too hot to run. It grew from there and helped build team unity as well as encourage the student athletes to learn Fox said in a press release.
“All my runners come to my room with their homework, study materials, or whatever academic work they have, and we spend one to two just working,” Fox said. “I give them this day to focus on their academic success. After all they are students first and athletes second.”
The study groups included athletes on the varsity as well as frosh-soph teams, about 40 in all, according to the release.
