Prosecutors say an Oak Lawn woman hit her 6-month-old granddaughter in the head and body with a sledgehammer before slitting her throat with a carving knife on Sunday.
The grandmother, Alfreda Giedrojc, 61, of 6605 W. 91st St., in Oak Lawn, has been charged with murder stemming from the death her baby granddaughter, Vivian, of Bolingbrook.
Cook County Judge Kerry Kennedy on Monday ordered Giedrojc held without bond.
“Her father and grandfather had stepped out of the grandparents’ house for a short time when this horrific event took place,” Oak Lawn police said in a press release said.
Police responded to a call at about 10:45 a.m. Sunday of an armed subject in the 6600 block of 91st Street in Oak Lawn. While enroute officers received information that an infant child had “suffered a significant injury,” according to a statement from the Oak Lawn Police department.
After life-support measures were performed on the scene, the infant was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where the child was pronounced dead at 1:48 p.m., police said.
Giedrojc was scheduled to appear in bond court Monday afternoon, according to the release.
