The second-grade classes from Wilkins Elementary School, 8001 S. 82nd Ave., Justice, recently visited Blackberry Farm in Aurora for the day.

The Oct. 17 event provided an introduction into the students’ plant unit, according to a news release from the school.

The classes also are digging deeper into learning about explorers such as Christopher Columbus through short stories and minibooks, the release said.

The second-graders also have started history pockets on Pilgrims, and soon will learn about Native Americans as well.

The field trip experience helped introduce students to explorers and early colonization, which are two topics covered in second grade during the school year, the release said.
