What’s Going On in Oak Lawn for March 5, 2014

Here is a look at what’s going on in Oak Lawn.

News includes Richards High School being a chess champ and a family skate at the Oak Lawn Park District Ice Arena.

Richards is chess champ

Richards High School in Oak Lawn recently won the Class AAA Illinois Chess Coaches Association state championship.

The program’s history includes earning 14 straight conference titles under the direction of social studies teacher Manuel Montes, according to the school.

Adrian Chavarria went 7-0 at the state championship and finished in second place overall out of 240 players at 8th board. Andrew Gacek was 6-1 and placed eighth out of 150 players.

The team went 5-2 at the state tournament, including a win over St. Ignatius.

Richards finished with 5.0 points, just ahead of Fenwick’s 4.5.

Oak Lawn Community High School finished ninth with 3.5.

Family Skate

The Oak Lawn Park District Ice Arena, 9320 S. Kenton Ave., will host the Green and White Family Skate event from 2 to 3:15 p.m. March 9.

There will be skating, raffles and music provided by CMT Productions, according to a press release from the park district.

Weber Irish Dancers will perform about 2 p.m.

Admission is $6 and skate rental is $3.

Top-flight movies at library

Six of the nine movies nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture will be shown at the Oak Lawn Public Library in the coming months.

The price can’t be beat: They’re free. Each movie will be shown in the lower-level meeting room. Seating is first-come, first-served.

“Captain Phillips” (PG-13) 10 a.m. March 7

“Gravity” (PG-13) 2 and 6:30 p.m. March 20

“Philomena” (PG-13) 10 a.m. April 4

“The Book Thief” (PG-13) 2 p.m. April 19

“Dallas Buyers Club” (R) 2 and 6:30 p.m. April 22

“American Hustle” (R) 2 and 6:30 p.m. May 15

“Nebraska” (R) 10 a.m. May 23

Other than “The Book Thief,” all of the above were nominated for Best Picture.

“The Book Thief” is being shown for National Library Week.

Hold ’em Tournament

The Oak Lawn Community High School athletic boosters will host a Texas Hold ’em tournament from 6 p.m. to midnight March 22 at the Garden Chalet, 11000 S. Ridgeland Ave., Worth.

Tickets are $75 and include an open bar, dinner buffet and table entry. A one-time additional chip purchase will be provided at check-in.

Proceeds benefit the athletic programs at Oak Lawn.

Chamber luncheon

The Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce will host its monthly luncheon, with registration starting at 11:30 a.m., on March 11 at Oak Lawn Community High School, 9400 Southwest Highway.

The chamber will recognize the Oak Lawn students who created illustrations for the 2013 fire safety coloring book, and entertainment will be provided the school chorus.
