Powell wins golf tournament

The Illinois State Open Miniature Golf Tournament took place recently at Ball Fore Miniature Golf Course, which is owned and operated by the Chicago Ridge Park District.

John Powell shot an overall 189 to win the 2011 Illinois State Open. Astra Miglane-Stanwyck took second place, and Jason Schifler took third.

Richards, Shepard volley for the cure

Despite playing for bragging rights and, possibly, the South Suburban Conference Red Division crown, volleyball players from Richards and Shepard high schools united before their match yesterday for a common cause.

Ditching their school colors for pink, the freshman, sophomore and varsity teams posed together for a photo that symbolically concluded their ‘Volley for the Cure’ campaign. The match provided the final act following weeks of fundraising and awareness efforts about the risks of breast cancer.

Shepard won the South Suburban Conference match.

Evergreen Park

Marching band performs for Sox

The Evergreen Park Mustang Marching Band recently performed the national anthem during a Chicago White Sox baseball game.

It was the fifth time in six years that the band has performed the anthem at U.S. Cellular Field. After the band’s performance, students watched the game.

The band also raised more than $2,000 toward its Liberty Bowl performance tour in Memphis in December.

St. Christina students ‘Read for the Record’

Kindergarten students at St. Christina School in Chicago recently participated in Jumpstart’s “Read for the Record” in which two million children across the nation read the same book on the same day. This year’s book was “Lama Lama Red Pajama” by Anna Dewdney.

SXU celebrates library re-opening

St. Xavier University recently celebrated the grand re-opening of its newly renovated Robert and Mary Rita Murphy Stump Library. Library staff and student workers offered guided tours of the new art learning facility.

Renovations include a remodeled reading room with new furniture, lighting and millwork; improved wireless connectivity; windows to the group study rooms; a raised ADA-compatible floor with power outlets every 10 feet; and additional computers.

Other renovations include a new entranceway to the group study rooms; new touchscreen scanners; copiers and printers; and enhanced lighting in the compact shelving area.
