Fifth-grade students at Paul Revere Intermediate School in Blue Island learned ways they can help the environment thanks to a recent visit from the National Energy Foundation, a branch of Nicor Gas that provides curriculum, training and materials to promote a better understanding of energy, natural resources and the environment.
The group presented “Think Energy,” which talks specifically about the actions that can be taken to conserve energy. Presenters Jenell Brimhall and Janet Smith shared information about the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources and encouraged students to work with their families in actively saving energy.
Some suggestions included turning off lights and electronics when not in use; replacing incandescent light bulbs with CFL bulbs; adjusting home thermostats; using lids when cooking; washing full loads of laundry; reducing time in the shower; and installing a faucet aerator.
Students also received a Take Action Kit that contained energy-efficient products, including a high-efficiency shower head, a shower timer, faucet aerators and a temperature gauge.
The kit also included a household survey scan form and, if 80 percent or more of the surveys are returned, participating classrooms will receive a mini-grant of up to $100.
