Science teachers from Kerr Middle School in Blue Island recently attended the first Illinois Science Education Conference hosted by the Illinois Science Teachers Association in order to learn about new programs and avenues to expand the teaching and learning of science.
An array of presentations, exhibits, vendors, speakers and demonstrations for science educators of all disciplines was offered to those in attendance.
Kerr teachers Cynthia Minatto, Rosalba Provenzano and Kristin Wajda attended a keynote presentation given by Brady Barr, a reptile expert and host of the National Geographic Channel’s “Dangerous Encounters.”
Throughout the day, ELL strategies, notebooking, hands-on science and incorporation of technology were topics of learning sessions and conversation among the many science colleagues attending the various workshops.
The conference wrapped up with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum of Science and Industry along with participation in the Crime Lab program as part of the various off-site tours and workshops available to conference attendees.
“I am excited to incorporate the strategies and activities presented at this conference with my colleagues and students,” Wajda said. “The Kerr science team is planning to partner with the Museum of Science and Industry in order to provide our families with some exciting hands-on science activities at a Family Night this spring.”
