The Consolidated High School District 230 School Board recently approved the appointment of Julia Wheaton as principal of Sandburg High School beginning with the 2012-13 school year. Principal Debbie Boniface will retire at the end of this school year.

“Dr. Wheaton’s passion for doing what is best for students and her abilities as a critical thinker and problem solver have been an incredible asset for the Sandburg community,” said Supt. James M. Gay. “Her interactions with administrators, staff, students, parents and community are highlighted by her belief in collaboration and teamwork. Her leadership will provide a seamless transition as Mrs. Boniface retires.”

Wheaton has served Sandburg High School as associate principal since 2009. In that time, she has led efforts both in instruction and student services including school improvement planning, chairing the Academic Integrity Board, overseeing guidance, special services and dean’s offices as well as serving as a liaison to numerous district committees.

Before joining the Sandburg High School administrative team, Wheaton was principal of Mokena Junior High School, director of Student Services for Mokena District 159 and served as an administrator and psychologist for the Lincoln-Way Area Special Education Joint Agreement District 843.

Wheaton has a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies from Loyola University, a master’s in educational administration from Governors State University, a master’s in school psychology from Illinois State University, and a bachelor’s degree in education from Illinois State University.
