Sandburg High School art student Ashley Fox was honored at a recent Orland Park Village Board meeting for receiving a National Scholastic Gold Medal.

Fox also traveled to New York, where the Empire State Building was lit up in gold to honor the National Scholastic Gold Medal winners.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have a legacy dating back to 1923.

Noteworthy past winners include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.

Fox’s work was given a Gold Key award for the scholastic regional competition and was juried and given the Gold Medal at the national level. Her black-and-white photograph titled “Outside Inside” is considered to be one of the most outstanding works in the nation, school officials said in a news release.
