Sears Holdings Corp. has decided to close a Kmart in Homer Glen in late January, a spokesman for the retailer said.
Employees at the store, 15830 Bell Road, were told of the decision Wednesday morning, Chris Brathwaite said.
A store-closing sale is scheduled to begin this weekend, he said.
There are 82 employees at the store, some of whom will be eligible for severance, Brathwaite said. Employees will have an opportunity to apply for positions at other Kmart and Sears stores, he said.
Poor sales at the Homer Glen store were a factor in the decision, he said.
“These decisions are never easy,” Brathwaite said. “We make decisions about our stores, like all retailers. We review our store portfolio and make decisions accordingly.”
The store opened in 1981 and, a few years ago, was converted to a Sears Essentials outlet. A format created after the 2005 merger of Sears and Kmart, Sears Essentials blended elements of both stores, such as selling Craftsman tools and Kenmore appliances.
The store later was remodeled and reopened in summer 2011 as a Kmart.
