Area high schools host math contest

St. Laurence and Queen of Peace high schools recently hosted the Eighth Grade Math Contest at St. Laurence.
Nearly 30 schools participated in the contest, which featured 60 teams. Overall, 240 individuals competed. At the end of the event, overall and individual awards were given.
St. Michael School in Orland Park (Team B) won first place; Healy Elementary School in Chicago (Team C) won second place, and Dore Elementary School in Chicago (Team A) won third place.
Individual winners included a tie for first place between Jimmy Silwa, from Old Quarry Middle School in Lemont, and Brian Piller, from Eisenhower Junior High School in Hoffman Estates.
“The teachers at St. Laurence and Queen of Peace were pleased with the great turnout for this event, and look forward to hosting another successful math contest in the future,” a school spokeswoman said.
