Nicole Powell, of Sandburg bowling, was the state runner-up last season, averaging 224 over 12 games at state.
She was 80 pins shy of the title won by Lincoln-Way West’s Morgan Flaherty.
Powell’s accomplishments this season include titles at the Reavis Invitational and Bengal Bowling Invite.
Does finishing second last year motivate you to win the title this year?
Well, of course. The girl who won it last year, Morgan Flaherty, is one of my good friends, so I was happy for her. It’s my goal just to beat her at state this year.
What was it like having you and your friend finish first and second in the state?
It was fun and it was bittersweet finishing second to her. She knew as soon as that happened last year that I’d be coming for her this year — and I am.
Is there pressure to live up to what you did last year?
There’s a little bit. My main focus is on the team, though. I want us to get back to state as a team. We lost some girls from last year, so I want to try to help the new girls move up and improve so we can make it back to state as a team.
What’s easier: Wii bowling or real bowling?
I’m not very good at Wii bowling. Real bowling is definitely easier for me.
What’s on you iPod?
I listen to everything, but country’s my favorite. I love Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan.
If you could take any celebrity to prom, who would it be?
Ryan Gosling, because he’s very good looking.
You’re stranded on a deserted island and can have an endless supply of one food. What do you pick?
Cheesecake. It’s delicious, and it’s my favorite food. My mom used to make pumpkin cheesecake that I loved, so that for sure.
