Sandburg students Philly-bound for debate tourney

Updated: April 4, 2013 6:02AM

Sandburg High School’s debate team took part in the final leg of the Northern Illinois NCFL Grand National Debate Qualifier, according to a District 230 news release.

The team competed against New Trier, Evanston, Loyola, Fenwick, Fremd and Stagg.

All of Sandburg’s varsity public forum debaters qualified for the national tournament in Philadelphia in May, the release said.

Kevin Massimilian and Grant Lewis took first place, while Jack Harmening and Mariel Natanawan took third and will try to beat the record they set at last year’s tournament, the release said. Robert Bourret and Anastasia Scourtes took fourth place; and Justin McCurdy and Kristina Linko, the only juniors to qualify, took fifth place. They will debate against hundreds of students from across the country on Memorial Day weekend in Philadelphia.
