Mike O’Malley, of Sandburg swimming, swam on three relay teams at the 2012 state meet, and this season won the 100-yard freestyle at the SouthWest Suburban Blue meet.
How did you get started swimming?
When I was 4 or 5, my mom took me to swim lessons and the guy who was teaching me told me I should go to age group.
What about swimming do you like the most?
You can always keep doing better and better. You could always get a better time. You’re never done.
How much did you watch the Olympics?
I watched most of the events — the events I swim. It’s really amazing they can be that fast and they’re only in their mid-20s.
Have you decided on a college?
I’m going to wait until after state to figure that out. I’m looking at Lewis, Ball State and Carthage.
Who would play you in the movie of your life?
I like movies, but I don’t really follow the actors that much.
Who would be your celebrity prom date?
Mila Kunis. She’s just beautiful.
Who’s the one person you’d like to meet?
Michael Jordan. I know he didn’t make his high school team and he was the best NBA player ever. He’s really inspiring to everyone. I would just like to learn a little from him.
Favorite music/artist?
Hip-hop. Drake.
Favorite sports team?
The Blackhawks. They’re always competitive. You can see they haven’t let down and they’re always in the mix. I watch them on TV. I haven’t gone to games because of swimming.
What will you remember most about your high school years?
All the great teammates. I met a lot of new people. I never thought I’d meet that many. Sandburg has been a great place to go to school.
As told to Tim Tierney
