Property taxes might not go down as a result, but Tinley Park-based Community Consolidated School District 146 plans to abate $1 million to taxpayers over a three-year period.
The District 146 board unanimously approved a resolution earlier this month at the recommendation of Supt. Jeff Stawick, according to a district news release.
Stawick said the district had a $1 million surplus in the fiscal year that ended June 30 and “healthy fund balances,” including a $16 million balance projected for its educational fund at the end of the current fiscal year, according to budget figures on the district website.
District business director Jeff Charleston said “tax bills will go up less than they would have” without the abatement, because the district is accepting less money than it is entitled to under the property tax system.
The abatement will be reflected in the fall tax bills of 2013, 2014 and 2015, the district said.
The district serves parts of Tinley Park, Orland Park and Oak Forest.
