The Sandburg High School speech team recently won two state championships in new events at the State Speech Finals in Peoria, according to a press release.
Cora Georgiou won in radio speaking, while Patrick Kelly and Rahul Jacob won for Humorous Duet Acting. Winning two championships at a speech tournament was a first for the school.
The school also finished in fifth, with 18 students in Performance in the Round, and sixth with Rahul Jacob in Humorous Interpretation, according to the release.
Georgiou has been a top Radio Speaking competitor for three years, coach Geoff Epperson said. The head coach is Dan Sackett.
“The first time I heard Cora, I knew she had it,” Epperson said.
Kelly and Jacob performed “The Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged).” Meanwhile, the students in the Performance in the Round performed “Peter and the Starcatcher,” which is a prequel to “Peter Pan.”
