Sandburg student wins symphony competition

Violinist Patrick Bieszke, of Orland Park, a sophomore at Sandburg High School, won the Southwest Symphony Orchestra’s 2013 Youth Concerto Competition.
Bieszke performed the Allegro non troppo movement of Edouard Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole.
He is slated to repeat his award-winning performance at the SSO’s Youthful Pursuits Concert at 4 p.m. April 28 at Trinity Christian College, 6601 W. College Drive, Palos Heights.

Bieszke has been playing violin since age 4. He began at the Northwest Indiana Suzuki School with Linda Lager. After moving to Orland Park, he continued lessons at Music Connections with Linda Veleckis. For the past six years, he has been studying with Kamen Vatchev.
Bieszke’s parents are from Poland, where his great-grandfather was a music teacher for more than 50 years. Bieszke has performed several times at the Polish Museum in Chicago.
Bieszke’s accomplishments began early in life. When he was 8, he played violin while using a Hula Hoop at the Star Plaza Theater in Merrillville and received a standing ovation.
Patrick is also the recent winner of the Northwest Indiana Youth Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition and a two-time winner of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra’s Young People’s Competition.
He is a member of the Northwest Indiana Youth Symphony and a former member of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra.
Bieszke and two friends have formed the HIP Trio. “HIP” stands for the country of each member’s ethnicity: Hong Kong, Ireland and Poland. The trio of young musicians traveled to China with the South Shore Symphony Orchestra in 2011 and performed in Shanghai, Huzhou and Guangzhou.
Bieszke also enjoys musical theater and recently played Friedrich in Sandburg’s 2012 production of “The Sound of Music.”
As an accomplished swimmer and triathlete, he is a two-time winner of Iron Kids Nationals and a silver medalist in the 2012 Youth Elite Triathlon Nationals.
Bieszke is a member of the Sandburg cross country team and the Hickory Willow Swimming Association.
