The Orland Junior High School speech team took first place in the recent SWIC Declamation Competition at Central Junior High in Evergreen Park.
Individual winners on the eighth-grade team were Sara Toth, first place in Dramatic Interpretation; Eve Moyar, first place in Comedy Duet; Dana McKay, first place in Comedy Duet; Libby Paulson, second place in Oration; Jolie Slater, second place in Humorous Interpretation; Mackenzie Herman, third place in Verse Reading; and Courtney Wehmeier, fifth place in Prose Reading.
The students worked after school and on their own since late December to prepare and practice their speeches. The team performed for the sixth- and seventh-grade classes of the school to inspire students in other grades to join the speech team.
Teacher Janine English coached the Orland Junior High speech team for the competition. She has coached the team for 15 years after coaching the SWIC team at Jerling Junior High School for seven years.
