Homer Glen has designated Aug. 10 as “International Starry Night” and Aug. 11 to 17 as “Starlight Week” in celebration of the beauty of the stars.
Homer Glen is the fourth International Dark Sky Community in the world as determined by the International Dark Sky Association, the third Dark Sky Community in the United States and the first east of the Mississippi River.
The village has been promoting starry night viewing since 2008 and educating the public about dark sky awareness at Homer Township’s Trantina Farm with sStargazing events.
The next stargazing event in support of “International Starry Night” will take place Sept. 27 at the Trantina Farm. The Kankakee Area Stargazers, the Naperville Astronomical Association, and the South West Astronomy Observers Group will once again bring large telescopes and assist the public in free viewing of the night sky.
