During a snowstorm on a recent early morning, players from the Orland Park–based Attack Volleyball Club’s 15 Black team made the drive to northwest Indiana for the South Side Power Series Tournament.
Six matches later, the team was the undefeated champion of the 15s division, which included 12 teams from Illinois and Indiana.
“It was a long, snowy ride to Hobart (Ind.),” coach Jason Sabo said, “but the girls played great as a team and played their roles well.
“Emily Wicks anchored and led the offense the entire tournament as our starting setter. Our back row defense was also very strong the entire day.”
Deonna Carey, Christine Malito and Sarah Rojas led the back row defense while Dani Amador led the team in kills and Sammy Udarbe racked up the most aces.
“I’m very proud of the girls,” Sabo said. “Some of them played in positions they don’t normally play. Their hard work and focus paid off.”
