Opelka wins Orland Open Spelling Bee

Beverly Opelka, of Palos Park, recently won the 33rd Orland Open Spelling Bee at the Presbyterian Church in Orland Park. Judy Rice, of Frankfort, finished in second place, and Bob Carlson, of Orland Park, finished third.
The event, which featured 93 contestants age 8 to adult, lasted more than two hours and included 520 words. The winning word was “cabochon.”
Judges were Orland Park trustees Ed Schussler and Pat Gira and former trustee Tom Dublebeis. The Spelling Bee was coordinated by Amy Goebel and Margie Burnett.
