Twelve students from Cardinal Joseph Bernardin School in Orland Hills recently competed in a Solar Car Competition at St. Xavier University’s Orland Park campus.
They were grouped into teams of three, with two teams representing the eighth-grade class, and two teams representing the seventh-grade class.
CJB earned third- and fourth-place finishes at the competition, which included 16 Catholic and public schools in the area.
“We were very pleased with our showing at the first Solar Car Competition at St. Xavier University,” said coach Christine Kirk. “The students were enthusiastic about the designing of their cars, and it was a great way for our students to use their creativity and problem-solving skills.
“They are already working on ways to improve their cars for next year’s competition.”
The third-place winning team included eighth-grade students Jonathan Hoelzel and Mike Wolf, both of Orland Park; and Nick O’Connell, of Homer Glen.
The fourth-place team included seventh-grade students Zach Flowers and Caitlin Shanahan, both of Orland Park; and Joe Wardell, of Palos Park.
