Who stole Mrs. Kane’s lunch?
That was the question of the night during Orland Junior High School’s recent Reading Extravaganza event. The program was themed around CSI, which stands for “Cool Student Investigators.”
Students and their families were charged with solving the fictitious crime of the stolen lunch. Teachers paired with community leaders and other guests to solve the mystery using a variety of forensic skills.
Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin, for example, partnered with teachers Jennifer Yerks and Kristin Howell in explaining hair analysis. Officer Scott Schuster assisted teachers Cheryl Knight and Chris Boyadjian in leading a shoe print comparison session, while D.A.R.E. officer Charles Barth worked with Debbie Weber and Michele Hallman in fingerprinting.
In addition to the activity stations, the event welcomed award-winning nonfiction author Sally Walker, who described her love of research and writing.
At the end of the night, the culprit was identified as assistant principal Pam Becker.
“We were thrilled that author Sally Walker was able to join us for the evening,” said media specialist and event organizer Amanda Kuzminski. “She researches and writes science-related books, some of which involve forensic anthropology. By combining her presentation with engaging, hands-on forensic activities and other science reading activities, we were able to give families an evening of CSI-style fun.”
