Briefly: Bureau to host Social Media Summit

The Chicago Southland Convention and Visitors Bureau is hosting a Social Media Summit from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Alsip, 5000 W. 127th St.

The summit will help small-business owners learn how to use social media to their advantage.

The cost to attend is $95 if registration is received by Feb. 15. After that date, the cost is $110.

Moraine’s Tinley campus goes green

Moraine Valley Community College’s Southwest Education Center in Tinley Park recently received platinum certification, the highest ranking possible, by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

The school, 17900 S. 94th Ave., incorporates low-flow plumbing fixtures and bioswales in the parking lot to reduce water runoff. Also, a geothermal system helps to regulate temperatures inside the building. MVCC said the additional costs for the green elements should be recouped over time in lower energy costs. MVCC said it’s the second community college building in Illinois to receive a platinum certification.
