The declamation team from Prairie View Middle School in Tinley Park recently captured its second consecutive Southwest Interscholastic Conference championship.
The group out-performed 12 Southwest Suburban teams and had four individual first-place finishes in the competition.
“I’m extremely proud of the hard work and dedication of these students,” said coach Wendy Wasilewski. “It was a very rewarding season.”
Students earning honors included Heba Alsheikh (second place in oratorical declamation); Tori Borak (first place in prose interpretation); and Nick Bobber and Mark Pappas (first place in humorous duet acting).
Other students earning honors included Yasmeen Sheikah (first place in verse interpretation); Halle Swieringa (third place in humorous interpretation); and Maria Szczasny (first place in dramatic interpretation).
Declamation is a competitive speech team offering students an opportunity to express themselves persuasively, comedically and theatrically in six categories.
Student performance pieces are three to seven minutes in length and are judged using criteria selected for each category, including vocal variety, eye contact, gestures and articulation.
