Purple Heart veterans plan bench at Tinley Park memorial

Updated: October 7, 2012 8:04AM

A veterans organization that wants to be represented at the veterans memorial plaza being built near the 80th Avenue Metra train station in Tinley Park has taken a big step toward making that a reality.

John Domina, commander of Chapter 252 of The Military Order of the Purple Heart, on Tuesday night presented Tinley Park officials with a $2,000 check for a down payment toward a bench and plaque at the plaza.

The organization is for veterans who received the Purple Heart after being wounded.

“It means a lot for the future. Our families, our children and our grandkids will be able to come see this,” Domina said.

There will be six benches at the memorial, located just south of the station. Each bench and plaque costs $5,000.

A dedication ceremony is planned for Nov. 12, Village Trustee Dave Seaman said.
