Greetings fellow Oak Lawnians!
Musichorale community choir announces its annual scholarship contest for amateur vocalists and instrumentalists. High school students are invited to audition for the vocal competition at 10 a.m. Oct. 27. The instrumental contest, open to students in sixth through 12th grades, will take place at 10 a.m. March 2.
Both contests will take place at Oak Lawn Community Church, 9000 S. Ridgeland Ave. in Oak Lawn. Vocal applications must be postmarked by Oct. 10, and instrumental applications must be postmarked by Feb. 10. The application fee for either competition is $25.
Kathy Marassa, a Musichorale member, said that vocal and instrument contestants can select their own piece, but it must be performed as the original piece. Both contests have time limits: Vocalists have five minutes and must bring their own accompaniment. Instrumentalists have six minutes per song.
First-, second- and third-place winners will be awarded more than $3,500 in prizes. The first-place prize is $1,000, and winners will be featured soloists at a Musichorale concert. Contest winners will be presented with their scholarships at the Christmas concert on Dec. 9.
Musichorale has a long history in Chicago and the southwest suburbs. Jeffrey Silhan has been the choir director for more than 30 years, taking over for his father, Art, who founded the choir back in 1947.
Musichorale’s 66th season is under way, and new choir members are welcome. The choir performs at parties, dedications, weddings, funerals and other events from September through April.
The choir also hosts two major concerts each year at Trinity Christian College. Rehearsals are at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Oak Lawn Community Church.
Membership is open to anyone in high school and older who enjoys music or singing. Having a musical background or knowledge of how to read sheet music is not required.
“There’s no prerequisite to join,” Marassa said. “Just come and try out if you have a joy of music or love of singing.”
The choir is made up of longtime members, new members and returning members.
“We have a few members that come back,” Marassa said. “Life has changed for them at home and they return.”
Dues per season are $25 for high school students, $37.50 for new members and $50 for returning members. Contest questions can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
