A fire in a recycling truck Thursday led to the temporary closure of 167th Street near 92nd Avenue in Orland Hills.

The street was closed for about a half-hour, Orland Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Raymond Kay said. There were no injuries and the fire’s cause is undetermined, he said.

“We put a lot of water on it. When all that paper and cardboard are compacted, it’s hard to get to the seat of the fire. So we put a lot of water on it, we fill it from above. That’s our basic tactic,” Kay said.

The call came in at 1:57 p.m., he said.

Firefighters used an aerial device that showered the truck with water, he said. It’s easier and safer than hauling a hose up a ladder, he said.
