Jenkins has been inspiring young audiences for more than 50 years, performing all over the United States and throughout the world, bringing to all audiences upbeat music that bears a lively message of unity and friendship that celebrates diversity.
She grew up on Chicago’s South Side where she had many musical influences. Her family relocated frequently, and Jenkins noticed that the rhythms, rhymes and games were different in each new neighborhood.
When she was still young, she began to create children’s songs and seek out education-oriented jobs.
Performing and writing music with the philosophy that learning and fun are interrelated, Jenkins’ call-and-response technique in songs, chants, poems, recitations and games are sung in Spanish, Chinese, Hebrew, Korean, Swahili and other languages.
“Songs from foreign languages and cultures have such interesting rhythmic patterns that children like to play,” Jenkins said.
Jenkins has made TV guest appearances on NBC’s “Today,” CNN’s “Showbiz Today,” “Barney & Friends” and “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” and in films shown on “Sesame Street.”
She was invited to share her music at the Smithsonian’s 150th Birthday Party on the Mall in Washington, D.C
Jenkins has released 28 albums and two videos on Smithsonian Folkways, and the Smithsonian Institution named her a national treasure.
Among Jenkins’ many awards are a 2004 Grammy for lifetime achievement and a Kohl Education Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.
A recipient of the 1999 American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award, Jenkins was the first children’s music entertainer to earn the prestigious honor.
The annual Ella Jenkins concert is co-sponsored by the Beverly Hills/Morgan Park Community of Churches and the Beverly Area Planning Association.
Birthday cake will be served after the concert, and free parking is available.
