Ron and Joanne Shear, of Palos Hills, are the 2013 recipients of Together We Cope’s Reimer Award, an annual honor for volunteers who demonstrate the care and compassion that make up the spirit of the Tinley Park-based nonprofit agency.
Volunteers since 2007, their efforts have touched every aspect of TWC’s work with south suburban families in crisis. They have worked in the food pantry and with fundraising events, kept records for client services and helped deliver special programs for clients. A favorite activity, they said, has been to help coordinate the annual Tinley Park postal carriers food drive.
Ron Shear is a retired pharmacist, and Joanne Shear retired as a dental office manager. They agree there is great pleasure in giving back to the community where they live.
“When you are young and busy with work and family, you always want to do more for the community but it’s hard to find time,” Ron Shear said.
Joanne Shear said, “I think it’s great we can do this work at this time in our lives.”
The Reimer Award has been given annually since 2005 in memory of the late Theodore H. Reimer Jr., a board member and volunteer at TWC for many years.
The Shears will receive the award March 1 at the TWC annual dinner dance at Odyssey Country Club in Tinley Park.
