Chicago area haunted houses gear up for another season of thrills and chills

Looking at 2013’s crop of Chicago-area haunted houses, it’s clear that the sick freaks who plan these things (and we mean that lovingly) know that people are creeped the hell out by clowns.

But they didn’t just stop with clowns — oh, no. Some threw in the whole evil sideshow, like CarnEvil at Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates and Fear City and Fables Studios’ Carnivale in Morton Grove.

Others are putting the “howl” into holidays with sinister takes on St. Patrick’s Day, Valentine’s Day and even Christmas, like the Lombard Jaycees and the Asylum Xperiment in Villa Park.

Just like a good man, you can’t keep the zombies down.

Abyss Haunted House: Dollinger Family Farm, 7502 E. Hansel Road, Channahon, (708) 691-4159, abysshaunts.com. Tickets, $25. Hours: 7-10 p.m. Sundays and Thursdays and 7-11 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays Oct. 4-31.

All Hallows Eve — Village of Fear: Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster St., Naperville, (630) 420-6010, napersettlement.org. Tickets, $10-$15. Hours are 6-10 p.m. Oct. 18-19. Some of the scariest characters of the past, present and future come to life.

The Asylum Xperiment: The Odeum Expo Center, 1033 N. Villa Ave., Villa Park, (630) 941-9292, asylumxperiment.com. Tickets, $25-$40. Hours: 7-10:30 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays and 7 p.m.-midnight Fridays-Saturdays Oct. 4-Nov. 2. Evil clowns and apocalyptic steampunk bikers are a few of the terrors guests meet at the three attractions: The House: Home for the Horrordays, Subterranean and Armageddon.

Basement of the Dead and Shattered — a 3D Nightmare: 42 W. New York St., Aurora, (630) 896-2466, 42fear.com. Tickets, $13-$18. Hours are 7-11 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays and 7-10 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays Oct. 4-Nov. 2 plus Oct. 30.

CarnEvil: Sears Centre Arena, 5333 Prairie Stone Parkway, Hoffman Estates, (847) 649-2368, carnevilchicago.com. Tickets, $35. Hours: 7-11 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays and 7-10 p.m. Sundays and Thursdays Oct. 4-6, 11-13, 17-20 and 24-27 and 7 p.m.-midnight Oct. 30-31. CarnEvil has five haunted houses and mazes. Blades of Gory ice rink only open Oct. 24-27. No pacemakers and no children younger than 12 without a guardian.

The Catacombs of St. Pascal: St. Pascal Church, 6143 W. Irving Park Road, Chicago, catacombshh.com. Tickets, $8. Hours: 7-11 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays and 7-10 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays Oct. 11-27. Yearly, madmen and monsters escape the Catacombs and roam free.

Creepy Hallow’s Blood Shed Haunted House, Hayride & Zombie Hunt: Fawn Landscaping, 24405 S. LaGrange Road, Frankfort, (708) 532-6668, creepyhallow.com. Tickets, $18-$25. Hours: 6-11 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays and Halloween, 6-10 p.m. Sundays and Oct. 30 during October. Includes a haunted house, haunted hayride, haunted corn maze and zombie paintball hunt.

Dark Harvest Mile of Terror: Andersons FUN-E Farm, 508 Illinois 126, Plainfield, (888) 352-5837, andersonsfunefarm.weebly.com. Includes a mile-long haunted hayride, crazy clown ice cream maze and haunted hayrides (7-10:30 p.m. Thursdays-Sundays in October).

Evil Intentions Haunted House: 900 Grace St., Elgin, evilintentionshauntedhouse.com. Tickets, $20. Hours are 7:30 p.m.-midnight Fridays-Saturdays and Halloween night to Nov. 1 and 7:30-10 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays and Oct. 29-30. Extremely intense and not recommended for ages younger than 13.

The Fear: Navy Pier, 600 E. Grand Ave., Chicago, (800) 595-7437, navypier.com or thefearhauntedhouse.com. Navy Pier’s haunted house, the Fear, returns to Navy Pier Oct. 10-31. Tickets, $12-$20. The house features both a nighttime haunted house and a low-scare, daytime attraction. The Fear is open 7-10 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays (and Oct. 30) and from 7-11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays to Oct. 31. The Fear-less Haunted House runs noon-5 p.m. Saturdays-Sundays and Oct. 14.

Fear City and Fables Studios’ Carnivale: 8240 N. Austin Ave., Morton Grove, fearcitychicago.com. Tickets, $15-$45. Oct. 4-6, 11-13, 17-20, 23-27 and 30-31 and Nov. 1-2. Hours are 7-11 p.m. Sundays-Thursdays and 7 p.m.-midnight Fridays-Saturdays and Oct. 30-31. Recommended for ages 12 and older.

Fright Fest: Six Flags Great America, 1 Six Flags Parkway, Gurnee, (847) 249-4636, frightfest.sixflags.com. Tickets, $32.50-$64.99. Hours: 5-11 p.m. Fridays, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturdays, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sundays, 6-10 p.m. Oct. 17 and 24, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 14. Fright Fest now includes Hurricane Harbor or the Bermuda Triangle. Many areas are not recommended after 4 p.m. for children or those who scare easily.

Hair Razor Haunted Scenes: St. Thecla Catholic Church basement, 6725 W. Devon Ave., Chicago, (773) 792-3077, hauntedscenes.com. Tickets, $12. Hours: 7-10:30 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays and 6-9:30 p.m. Sundays Oct. 11-27.

Happy Hell-a-Days: 356 Yorktown Shopping Center, Lombard, (630) 519-3694, haunted-house.com. Tickets, $5-$15. Hours: 7-11 p.m. Fridays-Sundays Oct. 11-27 and Oct. 29-Nov. 3. Lombard Jaycees present what is touted as the longest consecutively running haunted house in America.

Haunted Barn 13: 12323 River Road, Plano, Ill., (630) 779-2240, hauntedbarn13@yahoo.com. Hours are 7:30-10 p.m. Oct. 18-20 and 25-27 and Nov. 1. Tickets, $5. Children’s matinee from 3-7 p.m. Oct. 13. Barn 13 is celebrating 100 years of terror by bringing back themes from the past four years.

Haunted barn and wagon rides: Sonny Acres Farm, 29W310 North Ave., West Chicago, Ill., (630) 231-3859, sonnyacres.com. The haunted barn and haunted wagon rides operate Friday nights and weekends in October.

Haunted Forest Walk: Hawthorne Hill Woods, 2600 Center Drive, Woodridge, (630) 353-3300, www.woodridgeparks.org. Tickets, $5-$7. Hours are 6:30-9:30 p.m. Oct. 25-26 and children’s matinee from 1-3 p.m. Oct. 26.

Haunted Quarry: Harold Hall Quarry Beach, 400 S. Water St., Batavia, Ill., (630) 406-5282, bataviaparks.org. Hours are 7-10 p.m. Oct. 18-19 and 25-26. Tickets, $8.

The Haunting: The Children’s Farm at the Center, 12700 Southwest Highway, Palos Park, (708) 361-3650, thecenterpalos.org. Tickets, $10. “The Haunting,” a terrifying tale plus haunted hayride at 6:30, 7:15 and 8 p.m. Oct. 25-26.

Heap’s Haunted Corn Maze: 4853 U.S. 52, Minooka, (815) 475-7373, heapshauntedcornmaze.com. Tickets, $5-$15. Hours are 7-11 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays in October. Don’t get lost in the corn as you walk through scenes of terror.

Horrorland — Town of Terror: 14800 Ravinia Ave., Orland Park, (708) 675-7403, prepared2scare.com. Tickets, $12-$17. Hours are 7-11 p.m. Oct. 11-12, 18-19 and 24-26.

Kane County Scaregrounds: Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 Randall Road, St. Charles, (630) 587-8521, kcscaregrounds.com. Tickets, $15. Hours are 7:30-10:30 p.m. Oct. 11-12, 18-19 and 25-26. “Monster free” dates are 4-7 p.m. Oct. 20 and 27. Steel Beam Theatre’s 3-D haunted house.

The Massacre Haunted House: 3440 Odyssey Court, Naperville, (708) 320-3327, fearthemassacre.com. Tickets, $20-$35. Hours: 7-11 p.m. Thursdays-Sundays
and 7 p.m.-midnight Fridays-Saturdays Oct. 4-Nov. 2. Includes the Massacre Haunted House and Fear Factory 3-D.

Motel Massacre: Harlem Crossings Shopping Center, 19820 S. Harlem Ave., Frankfort, (815) 922-0245, frankfort-area-jaycees.org. Tickets, $12. Hours are 8-11 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays in October plus Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Frankfort Area Jaycees present this haunt, recommended for ages 8 and older.

Nightmare From North Street: Santa’s Village Azoosment Park, 601 Dundee Ave., East Dundee, Ill., (847) 426-6751, nightmarefromnorthst.com. Tickets, $14. Hours are 7-10 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays Oct. 4-26. Prepare for a scare as you zigzag through a maze of horrors in the upper level of the Haunted Barn.

Nightmare on Chicago Street: Chicago Street, Elgin, nightmareonchicagostreet.com. Hours are 6-11 p.m. Oct. 26. Tickets, $7-$10. Stay away from zombies and get to the safe zone for entertainment stages, Svengoolie, a costume contest, a hookah lounge, an absinthe parlor and vendors.

Psychosis Haunted House: 200 N. Spring St., Elgin, psychosishauntedhouse.net. Tickets, $16-$25. Open 7 p.m.-midnight Fridays-Saturdays and 7-10 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays to Nov. 2 and Oct. 30. For an extra fee, have yourself or someone in your group kidnapped or buried alive.

Realm of Terror: 421 W. Rollins Road, Round Lake Beach, Ill., (847) 363-8799, realmofterror.com. Tickets, $25. Hours are 7 p.m.-midnight Fridays-Saturdays and 7-10 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays Oct. 4-31 (closed Oct. 10). Mostly revamped for 2013. Anyone younger than age 16 must be with a parent or guardian.

Sandwich Sportsman’s Club Haunted House: 1011 Hartman Trail, Sandwich, Ill., (630) 479-1271, sandwichsportsmansclub.com. Tickets, $8. Hours are 7-11 p.m. Oct. 18-19 and 25-26. Patients from a sanitarium escape to a deserted mansion in the woods, where something is not right.

Screams in the Park: MB Financial Park at Rosemont, 5501 Park Place, (847) 349-5008, screamsinthepark.co. Hours are 8 p.m.-midnight Fridays-Saturdays, 7-11 p.m. Thursdays and Sundays Oct. 4-Nov. 2. Tickets, $15-$25. Not recommend for ages younger than 13.

Statesville Haunted Prison and City of the Dead: 17250 S. Weber Road, Crest Hill, (877) 722-7332, statesvillehauntedprison.com. Hours: 7-10 p.m. Sundays and Thursdays plus Oct. 23 and 30 and 7-11 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays Oct. 4-Nov. 2. Tickets, $30-$45. Must be 11 or older; 11- to 15-year-olds must be accompanied by a legal guardian. Statesville employs more than 150 actors in more than 40 rooms.

Village of Screamfield: 14300 S. Coil Plus Drive, Plainfield, screamhaunts@gmail.com, facebook.com/villageofscreamfield. Hours: 6-10 p.m. Oct. 18, 19, 25 and 26 and 6-8:30 p.m. Oct. 27. Family-friendly hours are 2-5 p.m. Oct. 19, 26 and 27. Tickets, free-$10. Village of Screamfield is a haunted house fundraiser for Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202.

Zombie Safari Hay Ride: Odyssey Fun Farm, 19112 S. Oak Park Ave., Tinley Park, (708) 429-3800, odysseyfunfarm.com. The Zombie Safari Hay Ride runs 7 p.m.-midnight Fridays-Sundays in October. Tickets, $20. There is also a flashlight maze.
