Country Club Hills Mayor Dwight Welch’s ex-girlfriend is facing charges after punching a Country Club Hills water department employee in the face, Homewood police said.

Michelle Garner, 30, 4400 block of Provincetown Drive, Country Club Hills, was charged with battery after the incident Friday at Brunswick Zone, 3043 183rd St., police said.

Police said a Brunswick Zone employee saw Garner punch Tony Harper, a former Country Club Hills Theater employee, in the face at about 12:35 a.m.

Harper, of Tinley Park, said he had a misunderstanding with Garner while inside the business, according to police. When he left, Garner and another person followed him out and Garner punched him before security restrained her.

Garner next is due in court Dec. 11 at the Markham Courthouse, police said. Reached by phone, Welch said that Garner was his ex-girlfriend.

Garner and Harper have lawsuits pending against the city. Harper filed a lawsuit in July 2012 in Cook County Circuit Court against the city, Welch, and former city manager Henrietta Turner alleging sexual discrimination, among other claims.

Garner, a former city employee who was laid off more than two years ago, filed a lawsuit in July 2011 in U.S. District Court in Chicago against the city and others alleging retaliation among other claims.
