Last season, Josh Powell finished 54th in the state while helping Andrew High School bowling take sixth place. This season, he’s led the Thunderbolts to a 10-1 record in dual meets and team titles at the Plainfield North, Vernon Hills and Andrew tournaments.

You’ve had a great season so far. How would you sum it up?

It’s been better than any other season so far. The team has really bonded together. I just want to keep my head straight and keep helping my teammates out.

How have you improved from last season?

I was in the bowling alley five, six days a week over the summer. I’ve been bowling two-handed for a little over a year now. It’s nice to know it paid off. I went to Arizona and a college coach helped me out with it. It’s nice to see all the power you can actually get from it.

How long have you been bowling?

Since I could walk, basically. I really got into it in middle school.

What do you like so much about it?

I like that no matter what day I go, I learn something new. You can never bowl exactly the same way. I also like that you can meet a lot of new people with different styles and personalities.

How many bowling balls do you own? What’s your favorite?

I have eight. I really like my Motiv Recon.

Better bowling movie: “Kingpin” or “The Big Lebowski”?

“Kingpin” is really funny.

What was your favorite holiday gift?

I got a blue Puma sweater that I like. It’s my favorite color and it’s comfy.

Do you have any superstitions?

I wipe my ball with two towels instead of one.

You’re stranded on a deserted island and can have an endless supply of one food. What do you pick?

Teddy Grahams. Probably chocolate chip ones. They’re bears and they make me feel young.

What’s your favorite movie of all-time?

“The Blind Side.” I like that it’s based on one guy who doesn’t have much, but with a little help he can do amazing things.

If you had to go on one reality show, which one would you pick?

“The Amazing Race” would be pretty cool.
