16-year-old dies at Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center

A 16-year-old boy died Saturday afternoon while being held at the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center.

Terry Bell Jr., 16, of 1000 W. 79th St., collapsed while playing basketball at the Detention Center, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. He was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 4:05 p.m.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Sunday.

Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez confirmed a death investigation was being conducted, but did not have any additional details.

The Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, located at 1100 S. Hamilton Ave., holds 10- to 16-year-olds who are waiting to appear in court.
