A Hickory Hills man has been charged with helping to steal more than $100,000 in property from a railroad yard on Chicago’s South Side.
George Galanos, 40, is one of three men who stole railroad ties and scrap metal on Wednesday from the Canadian National Railway yard in the 4700 block of South Merrimac Avenue, according to Cook County sheriff’s police. They said the others remain at large.
Police said a witness identified the vehicle used in the crime, and they alerted other police agencies and checked with local scrap-metal yards to see if any of the stolen property had been sold.
On Thursday, authorities stopped Galanos after his vehicle matched the getaway vehicle. He was charged with felony theft and criminal trespass.
Detectives later were able to recover some of the items stolen from the rail yard at local scrap yards, sheriff’s police said.
They’re asking anyone with information about the rail yard theft to call them at (847) 635-1188.
