SD 227 hosts party for Super Bowl

Updated: March 4, 2012 8:01AM

For the second straight year, Rich Township High School District 227 on Sunday will host a party for the Super Bowl.

And for the second straight year, it won’t cost party-goers a penny.

Admission, food and beverages are free, thanks to donations from local businesses.

District 227 will spend $634 to host the party, spokeswoman Nikitta Foston. She said the teachers union donated $800 to cover costs. Two security officers will be paid a total of $250 for five hours each, and two custodians will be paid a total of $384 for six hours of work each, she said.

Foston said the party was “an outgrowth of our community advisory council. They wanted to do something to bring all the community together. It’s a way to partner and to bring folks together who may not be in the same place often. We’re surrounding ourselves with something positive.”

Alcoholic beverages will not be allowed on the premises, Foston said.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Sunday, and the party will be held in the cafeteria of the school, 5000 Sauk Trail in Richton Park. The game between the New York Giants and New England Patriots starts about 5:30 p.m.

Food is being donated by Subway in Flossmoor and Sam’s Club in Matteson, she said. Coca-Cola is donating soft drinks.

There will be door prizes, including gift certificates from the Chicago Dough Co., Family Video, Beggars Pizza, Jimmy John’s and Pizza Hut, she said. East Bay, an athletics clothing company, will sell items at reduced prices, she said.

Foston predicts a good time will be had by all, especially the New York Giants.

“I’m going for the Giants. It’s not that I don’t like the Patriots, but I can’t really go against (Giants quarterback) Eli Manning,” she said.
