A south suburban woman accused of mistreating animals at her shelter near Tinley Park faces a March 7 bench trial at the Markham courthouse, a spokeswoman for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office said Monday.
Dawn Hamill, who owns Dazzle’s Painted Pastures Rescue and Sanctuary, 5555 W. 175th St., was charged with 10 misdemeanor counts of violating the state animal welfare and animal control act after a raid of the property in February.
A judge on Monday refused to reconsider a ruling made in December to disallow evidence obtained during the raid, the spokeswoman said. Hamill had argued police had no probable cause to search and raid the property.
During the raid, Cook County Sheriff’s police and animal control authorities found a dead miniature horse and a dead cat, along with other animals — including dogs, horses, goats, sheep, rabbits and llamas — that were sick or near death. More than 100 animals were removed from her business.
Multiple additional charges of administering rabies inoculations without a license, among other violations, were filed in March.
