Meeting in Mount Greenwood to address longer school day

Updated: February 2, 2012 12:16AM

The longer school day proposed by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will be discussed at a meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Mount Greenwood branch of the Chicago Public Library, 11010 S. Kedzie Ave.

Chicago Teachers Union vice president Jesse Sharkey will speak and answer questions until 7:30 p.m., according to Becky Malone, a parent with children at Mount Greenwood Elementary School.

Malone and other parents oppose the mayor’s plan for 7 1/2-hour school days. They suggest adding 45 minutes at the Mount Greenwood-area schools to lengthen the school day to 61/2 hours.

Representatives of Sutherland Elementary School will collect signatures on a petition opposed to the longer day starting at 5 p.m. Petitions may be signed at Cassel Elementary School from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
