A man who had been sleeping and his two dogs safely got out of their burning Hickory Hills apartment building Thursday morning thanks to a neighbor who knocked on the door and helped them out, a fire official said.
No one was injured in the fire that started about 9:30 a.m. in a second-floor unit in the three-story brick building at 8500 W. 95th St., Roberts Park Fire Protection District Lt. Clint Sanders said.
A neighbor who smelled smoke alerted the man to the fire, and they got the family’s two dogs, a black Labrador retriever and a pit bull, to safety. Neither dog was injured.
The man declined to comment.
The fire started in the kitchen and was quickly extinguished, but the cause had yet to be determined, Sanders said. Although there was substantial damage to the unit, other apartments in the 12-unit building were not damaged thanks to the masonry construction, Sanders said.
“Everything is contained to the one apartment. The damage looks worse than it is. It wasn’t that big of a fire,” Sanders said.
The man and his daughter said they had a place to stay Thursday night.
