Tinley Park motorcyclist killed by Metra train in Orland Park

Updated: April 5, 2012 8:15AM

A Tinley Park man was killed early Friday when the motorcycle he was riding struck a Metra train in Orland Park, officials said.

Joseph S. Demarco, 50, of the 16800 block of South 81st Avenue, died from injuries received in the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Demarco‘s motorcycle hit the train near 175th Street and Wolf Road about 12:45 a.m., officials said.

Metra inspected the crossing and found that the gates were working properly and that they had been lowered prior to the accident, Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said.

The motorcycle first hit the gate and then hit a front corner of the train engine, Reile said.

“According to the engineer, he was heading westbound to the coach yard in Orland Park. He saw the motorcycle at a high rate of speed heading north on Wolf Road,” Reile said. “The engineer didn’t have time to start the emergency stop prior to impact. With that amount of tonnage, you can’t stop on a dime.”

The train was making its last run of the night and there were no passengers on board, Reile said. The train was delayed about 80 minutes.

Metra police are handling the investigation, Reile said.

Police have not determined where Demarco was coming from or where he was heading, she said.

The damaged gate has been replaced.
