Share Your Soles, an Alsip-based nonprofit that has sent 1.5 million pairs of shoes to less fortunate people around the world, is being shooed from its warehouse and is looking for a new home, founder Mona Purdy said Tuesday.
“We need some help, a vacant warehouse that would be donated,” Purdy said. “All ideas are welcome.”
Share Your Soles has been at 5623 W. 115th St. in Alsip since January 2011, but the warehouse’s landlord has found someone who wants to lease the space, Purdy said. Share Your Soles paid some of the overhead but not rent, Purdy said. The organization has to be out by June 22, she said.
“They’ve been very good to us. We are very appreciative of all their help,” Purdy said of the landlord. “This gives other people a chance to help. We don’t just benefit the poor, but the children who come here and help and learn important lessons and kindness.”
Purdy hopes to maintain a warehouse in the area but understands it’s not a given since they are asking for donated space.
“We’re pretty established out here,” she said. “But change isn’t a bad thing, either. It can make you stronger. No matter what we face, we still are a rolling stone. This is just a little glitch.”
The nonprofit will be selling much of its furniture, shelving and overstock of executive desks, boardroom tables and more starting next week, on a cash-and-carry basis, Purdy said.
Share Your Soles will mark its 13th anniversary on May 24 with a celebration at Mastro’s Steakhouse in Chicago.
