Police statewide launch seat-beat enforcement campaign

Updated: May 12, 2012 12:58AM

State, county and local police departments on Friday launched their 2012 Illinois “Click It or Ticket” safety-belt enforcement campaign, which runs through the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Their goal is to save more lives by stringently enforcing safety belt laws around the clock, according to the Will County Sheriff’s office.

Provisional numbers show that during the 2011 Memorial Day weekend, there were 13 fatalities and more than 700 injuries on Illinois roadways. Six of those fatalities were alcohol-related.

In 2010, 22,187 passenger vehicle occupants were killed in crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and 51 percent were not wearing safety belts.
