Markham man dead, 5 wounded in birthday party shooting

One person was dead and five others were wounded early Saturday when a gunman walked up and opened fire at a crowd outside on Chicago’s Far South Side.
The shooter, an unknown male, walked up to a group on a porch in the 11600 block of South Peoria Avenue and opened fire at 2:28 a.m., police News Affairs officer Veejay Zala said.
The wounded were among a crowd gathered for a birthday party, Calumet District police said.
Paramedics took Melvin Jacobs, 23, to Advocate Trinity Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Melvin lived in the 16200 block of South Paulina Street in Markham, the medical examiner’s office said.
A 32-year-old man was shot in the head and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition.
Another man, 26, was also taken to Christ Hospital for a gunshot wound to the right thigh while a third man, 25, was shot in the back and taken to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island, Zala said.
A woman, 37, was shot in the thigh and taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Zala said.
The second woman suffered a graze wound to her back and refused medical attention.
The shooter fled and was not in custody as of Saturday night.
Area South detectives are investigating.
