Police: Thieves net large haul in ruse burglary of Tinley Park home

A ruse burglary may have resulted in gold jewelry valued at $180,000 and several thousand dollars in cash being stolen May 8 from a house in the 19400 block of Brookside Glen Court, according to police.
They said a man claiming to be a meter reader from the gas company told a resident that day that he needed access to the back yard to read the meter and detained the homeowner in the yard for several minutes.
Thieves ransacked a bedroom and removed a safe that contained gold necklaces, earrings, bracelets and other gold jewelry and $4,500 in cash, police said, and an additional $8,000 cash was stolen from a file cabinet in the bedroom.
Gold jewelry valued at $55,000 and $2,000 cash were stolen from another bedroom, police said.

Road rage leads to charge
A Tinley Park man was charged with battery after he attacked a man during a May 16 road rage incident, police said.
The incident occurred about 9 p.m. near 159th Street and 76th Avenue when Daniel L. Lewis, 27, 7544 W. 161st St., was driving a pickup truck and became angry at the driver of a car whom he thought was going too slowly, according to police.
They said words were exchanged, and Lewis and the other driver got out of their vehicles and began fighting, with Lewis punching the 33-year-old victim repeatedly while using the door of the pickup truck to pin the man against his car.
Lewis then got back into his truck, and he and a female passenger tried to leave, but the victim stood in front of the truck to block it, causing Lewis to make a U-turn and drive off south on 76th Avenue, police said.

Teen threatened
An 18-year-old Oak Lawn man was threatened May 16 by a man who pointed a semi-automatic gun toward him and yelled a racial slur at him, according to police.
The teen told police he was crossing the street at 93rd Street and Neva Avenue about 8:30 p.m. when a man wearing black clothing and a hooded sweatshirt got out of a van, accosted him and then returned to the van, which drove away north on Harlem Avenue. There were at least three other men in the van, the teen said.
He told police the incident may have been related to a confrontation he was involved in 45 minutes earlier while playing basketball behind Simmons Junior High School, 6500 W. 95th St. A teenage boy scattered the contents of the victim’s book bag on the court and said his cousins would kill him, police said.

Homeowner fights off angry intruder
A village resident used a fruit bowl and a landscaping rock to attack a man who broke into his house in the 6300 block of 93rd Place, police said.
Kamal Hasan, 25, 9721 Cicero Ave., Oak Lawn, was charged with home invasion after he was attacked at 5:40 p.m. May 19 by the 48-year-old homeowner, police said.
The victim told police he was asleep in a second-floor bedroom, was awakened by a loud noise and went downstairs to see Hasan banging on the glass patio door. Hasan broke the glass, entered the house and charged the homeowner while shouting obscenities at him, police said.
The homeowner punched Hasan several times, pulled his shirt over his head and hit him over the head with a fruit bowl, according to police. They said the struggle continued outside, where the victim yelled for help and hit Hasan in the back of the head with a softball-sized landscape rock.
