Volunteers sought for Little Calumet River cleanup

Updated: July 3, 2012 12:43PM

Volunteers are needed June 2 to clean up a section of the Little Calumet River from South Holland to Blue Island.

The event is hosted by the Calumet Waterway Stewards. Participants must register in advance at www.calumetwaterwaystewards.com/register.

Volunteers can choose to clean the waterway from on land or in the river.

Those with canoes, kayaks or other small watercraft will meet at Gouwens Park, 16170 Seton Drive in South Holland, for an 8 a.m. launch. A limited supply of loaner canoes and kayaks are available. Crews will paddle downstream, collecting trash and debris in the craft or towing it alongside.

The group working on land will meet at 9 a.m. at the Little Calumet boat ramp just east of Ashland Avenue and north of Jackson Street in Blue Island.

The cleanup event is expected to last until 1 p.m.
