Judge: I’ll hold Beavers’ trial by year’s end

U.S. District Judge James Zagel said Wednesday he intends to hold the trial for for Cook County Commissioner William Beavers before the end of the year. Prosecutors and lawyers for Beavers agreed in court Wednesday to come up with a trial date. Beavers’ lawyers are seeking FBI notes from Beavers’ interview by authorities. Defense lawyer Aaron Goldstein said the interview took place “several years ago” and that the defense has only a one-page summary of the interview. Beavers is facing federal tax-evasion charges. In February, the onetime Chicago cop and former alderman was charged with failing to pay federal income taxes on more than $226,000 he took from his campaign funds and his county expense account to go gambling and to boost his city pension. Beavers has denied that he owes taxes.
