Southland gun buyback program is Saturday

Updated: June 22, 2012 11:06AM

The South Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police will sponsor a gun buyback program from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at five south suburban police stations.

Participants will receive $50 cash for each working firearm, with a limit of $100 per person regardless of the number of guns turned in. Pellet and BB guns will also be accepted but won’t be exchanged for cash.

Guns must be transported either in a car trunk or in an inaccessible area of a van or truck, and participants will be instructed to not bring the gun themselves into the police station. For people unfamiliar with guns or uncomfortable handling them, they’re advised to contact their local police department for assistance.

Departments that will serve as dropoff sites are:

Calumet City, 1200 Pulaski Road, (708) 868-2500

Chicago Heights, 1601 S. Halsted St., (708) 756-6400

Dolton, 14014 Park Ave., (708) 841-2145

Midlothian, 14801 S. Pulaski Road, (708) 389-0200

Riverdale, 725 W. 138th St., (708) 841-2203
