A Burger King restaurant in South Chicago Heights was destroyed by fire Wednesday night.
Three employees and two customers escaped without injury, but a firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion and was kept overnight at St. James Hospital, Fire Chief Larry Nardoni said.
The state fire marshal’s office on Thursday morning was investigating the cause of the fire at the restaurant, 3219 Chicago Road, Nardoni said.
Firefighters arrived at 7:40 p.m. to find heavy smoke and a fire burning through the roof, he said. Employees were cooking on the grill when they saw fire flash up into the hood, and “away the restaurant went,” Nardoni said.
The chief said he suspects it was an accidental grease fire.
